Classification


There are seven classification divisions that range from 0.5 to 3.5 points based on functional

ability. A player with a 0.5 classification has the most involved impairment and is similar in functional ability to an individual with C5 quadriplegia. A player with a 3.5 classification has the least involved impairment and is similar to an individual C7-8 incomplete quadriplegic. Classification is determined through an off-court assessment performed by a trained classifier. Classification is determined by the following three criteria:

  • Manual muscle test performed on all upper-extremity musculature
  • Functional trunk test in all situations, including, if applicable, manual muscle tests of trunk and lower-extremity musculature
  • Functional movement tests for movements used during the sport, including twisting, turning, pushing wheelchair, dribbling, passing and transferring
