Prior to beginning an exercise program, it is best to consult with your primary health care provider. Follow the guidelines for exercise testing and evaluation outlined by the American College of Sports Medicine. A few key recommendations:
- Individuals with uncontrolled hypertension should consult with their physician prior to initiating an exercise program
- Individuals with hypertension and known cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal or metabolic disease should have a medical evaluation before exercise testing
- Relative contraindications (careful evaluation of the risk-benefit ratio) are resting blood pressure greater than or equal to 200/110 mmHg
- Individuals on beta blockers will have a decreased heart rate response to exercise and reduce maximal exercise capacity
