Prevention


High blood pressure is a modifiable condition.  In order, to prevent and/or adequately control hypertension it is important to be aware of the following lifestyle modifications.

  • Stop smoking
  • Lose weight, if overweight
  • Increase physical activity to improve cardiac fitness levels
  • Reduce sodium to <2.4 g of sodium or < 6 g of salt per day (1 1/4 teaspoon salt)
  • Reduce intake of dietary saturated fat and cholesterol
  • Moderate alcohol intake (one to two drinks per day)
  • Adequate intake of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and protein
  • Stress management
