High blood pressure is a modifiable condition. In order, to prevent and/or adequately control hypertension it is important to be aware of the following lifestyle modifications.
- Stop smoking
- Lose weight, if overweight
- Increase physical activity to improve cardiac fitness levels
- Reduce sodium to <2.4 g of sodium or < 6 g of salt per day (1 1/4 teaspoon salt)
- Reduce intake of dietary saturated fat and cholesterol
- Moderate alcohol intake (one to two drinks per day)
- Adequate intake of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and protein
- Stress management
