Nutrition Spotlight: 100% Fad-Free


In accord with the American Dietetic Association's institution of March as National Nutrition Month, this article refers to making lifestyle choices and changes that are 100% fad-free. Older fad diets include Horace Fletcher's chewing each bite of food 32 times as a weight control method, liquid protein diet drinks (initially developed in 1930), the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, and juice diets.

In order to achieve long-term success in following healthy lifestyles, both dietary intake and physical activity must be addressed. For example, a fad diet is evident when no physical activity is required. Adequate physical activity and nutritional intake must be part of a long-term success program. Therefore, the next time you see a fad diet advertised on television, ask the following questions:
