Overcoming Pain is a comprehensive resource for those suffering from pain of various origins. The authors view pain as complex and contextually significant, and as such, so is its treatment. A number of treatment options are presented, with which one can create a plan for managing present and future pain. These include a variety of medical, non-medical, and alternative treatments. Chapters include discussion on what pain is and how it occurs in the body, types and causes of pain, and pain assessment. It also includes sections on navigating the health care system, racial disparities related to pain management, research and participation in clinical trials, as well as advice on how to become more proactive through advocacy. The book concludes with appendices containing assessment tools and further resources, and is endorsed by the American Pain Foundation, one of the nations largest patient support organizations.
