Resources to Promote Inclusive Fitness Opportunities


Yes, people with disabilities face some additional barriers to being physically active.  The good news is that there are many resources, services, and organizations to help you find appropriate fitness opportunities, trained professionals, and accessible places to be active. With a little creativity and tenacity you will be well on your way to achieving the healthiest version of you! 

Trained Fitness Professionals:

•    ACSM/NCHPAD Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainers (CIFT)
•    NSCA Certified Special Population Specialists (CSPS)
•    Ask the fitness facility for a certified trainer or if any have experience working with people with disabilities. Always establish open communication about your goals and abilities. 
•    Contact NCHPAD to find a trained fitness professional in your area.

Search the NCHPAD website for a plethora of inclusive exercise ideas and tips. In addition, two physical activity programs (14 weeks to a healthier you! and Champion’s Rx) are available to you including exercise instruction and technical assistance. Discover Accessible Fitness:
This booklet is designed to serve as a wheelchair user’s guide for using fitness equipment. This guide will help you safely and effectively use equipment most often found in fitness centers. Stability issues in regards to exercising in your wheelchair as well as safety regarding transfers will be addressed. Adaptive equipment that can help you perform your exercise program with greater ease is discussed, in addition to exercise precautions relating to some secondary conditions. A full overview of the components of fitness including cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility are included along with photo and text descriptions of useful exercises for wheelchair users.
