Notes

For one magic August week, Michigan children with juvenile arthritis put their health worries aside and indulge in the splendor and pleasure of a special summer camp. Camp Dakota, the Arthritis Foundation, Michigan Chapters summer camp program, debuted in 2003. For the campers and their families, camp provides a safe and memorable summer adventure.

Organized in conjunction with the staff at the Lions Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer, Michigan, the week-long experience is designed to help campers build confidence, independence and lasting friendships. For most campers, living and playing with others challenged by arthritis helps them feel less isolated and more connected to a community.

In addition to the traditional camp fun boating, swimming, archery, fishing, campfires, arts and crafts, horseback riding Camp Dakota campers also enjoy many non-traditional camp activities. Michigan pediatric rheumatology professionals volunteer time at camp, not only providing medical support, but leading fun learning sessions about juvenile arthritis. A favorite is Doc-in-the-Box where campers assemble for a fun question and answer session with the camp medical staff.
