Notes

The mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. To fulfill this mission, the American Diabetes Association funds research, supports advocates to improve the lives of people with diabetes, and provides innovative and educational programs for adults and children with diabetes. One such program is Camp Midicha, the only residential camp in Michigan dedicated to and designed for children and teens with diabetes.

After the American Diabetes Association was formed, Camp Midicha was established in 1955. Its name is derived from the words Michigan Diabetes Children's Association. Although the Michigan Diabetes Children's Association is no longer in existence, the name Camp Midicha has become synonymous with excellence and is still used today. Camp Copneconic, the campgrounds Camp Midicha utilizes, is accredited by the American Camping Association. The American Diabetes Association operates Camp Midicha and the Camp Committee establishes camp policies.

Evenings are filled with campfires, mock rock and many other Camp Midicha traditions.

All our staff, from directors and administrators to the counselors, specialists and support staff, work hard to allow kids to have fun in a safe environment. Our staff has training in diabetes management, emergency procedures, and cabin supervision. Every counselor goes through extensive training by the YMCA, addressing team building, homesickness, behavioral and other issues.

The home of the ADA's Camp Midicha is the YMCA's Camp Copneconic, an American Camping Association accredited campground. Camp Copneconic provides the campsite, dining accommodations, program and counseling staff. Camp Copneconic is located in Fenton, just south of Flint.
