Description
  • The sports and recreation program offered through IndependenceFirst provide youth and adults with disabilities exciting opportunities to play wheelchair and adapted sports. Wheelchair basketball, wheelchair softball, and wheelchair tennis are the most popular and we use the rules designed for these wheelchair sports. We also have other adapted sports such as ice hockey, boccia, and waterskiing. All of our sports programs are implemented in the community and we always encourage people without disabilities to participate as well.

IndependenceFirst is the Midwest's largest Independent Living Center. Each of our programs are individualized and consumer driven. It is our mission to empower people with disabilities by teaching independent living skills, providing education, and answering questions. Our programs touch every aspect of a person's life from personal cares to employment, assistive technology to sports and recreation, access to advocacy. We are proud of our efforts in improving the lives of people with disabilities in our community.

IndependenceFirst has an assistive technology program with a "Try A Gadget" opportunity, with over 300 pieces of equipment for people to try. Computer technology, adaptive telephones, recreation equipment, tools for activities of daily living are all available.

All IndependenceFirst services are free of charge.
