Ten Take-Home Tips From the Conference on Ways to Feed Our Spirit


  1. Be fully present in the moment - pay attention to the look and feel of the weather, the sky, your surroundings, the emotional temperature of a human interaction. As you do good things for your spirit, such as listening to music, reading poetry, taking a warm bath, or walking the dog, pay attention to your inner rhythm and fully enjoy the experience.
  2. Take time to be still and listen to your inner voice. Experiment with practices like meditation, prayer, or guided imagery to find the one that works best for you.
  3. Listen, observe, and look for beauty in the ordinary. Practice appreciation of even the smallest good things. Soon this will become a habit.
  4. Begin to take risks - not physical risks necessarily, but the risk of reaching out to a new person; the risk of making a change you have been wanting to make; the risk of sharing your feelings with a friend or loved one;
  5. Honor the connections between people. We are all connected to one another and little kindnesses and good deeds will come back to us.
  6. Get involved with something that is larger than you - join a group, join a church, take part in a discussion online, do volunteer work. There is joy in working toward a common purpose with others.
  7. Know that you have the power to choose how to respond to events in your life. Although you don't create your own reality, you have a great deal of power to influence your reality. For example, believing that the world is basically a benevolent place and acting on that belief will bring you far more goodness and kindness than if you believe the world is cruel and you face life in a defensive posture.
  8. Don't be afraid to grieve the losses you experience - they are real and they are serious. Grieving and honoring your losses makes it possible to eventually move forward. Denying them puts them in control of your life and impedes forward motion.
  9. Try to find opportunities to laugh as many times a day as you can.
  10. Redefine "wasted time". For example while you're on hold, while you're waiting for a bus, or in the doctor's office. Instead, turn this into "found time" that becomes a bonus for you. You can use it for reflection, meditation, or simply taking pleasure in the moment.
