The importance of finding methods to improve cardiovascular function in this population is necessary to increase both length and quality of life (Jacobs, P.L., Mahoney, E.T., 2002). This research suggests that ambulation training may offer the benefits of cardiorespiratory capacity and efficiency without increasing incidences of shoulder pain or dysfunction, while also providing variety in the forms of exercise. However, one should consider if there are emotional repercussions of FES ambulation and if these repercussions outweigh potential physical results.
