Heart rate at peak exertion was greater with FES testing. Peak metabolic measures did not differ significantly between the two modes; however, there was a significant difference between the two in peak R values, The peak velocity of FES ranged from 4.4 to 23.9 m/min. The peak power output of the AC tests was 62.0 W. Test durations of FES and AC were significantly different, with AC tests lasting longer on average. The values of RPE at the end of the test were in each case "very hard", which suggests full exertion at termination. All 15 subjects reached volitional exhaustion in the AC test, but 7 were terminated during the FES test because they were unable to increase the walking pace.
Since subjects attained virtually the same peak values of VO2 for both activities, this study concluded that persons with T4-T11 level SCI can attain similar peak aerobic capacity with FES ambulation as with AC.
