Natural Sugars

glass of milkNature has provided us with natural sugars but some of these sugars can still be harmful to your health in large amounts. Remember that FIBER is what makes sugar not so bad; that’s why fresh fruit is considered a healthy food. Fruit contains sugar as well as fiber; however, fruit juice is not a healthy choice. When juice is removed from the fruit, fiber and most vitamins and minerals are left behind resulting in sugary liquid. So instead of trying to be healthy by choosing 100 percent fruit juice with no added sugars, consider a glass of water instead with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice to add a little flavor.

Other natural sugars that should be limited include:

  • Honey
  • Agave nectar
  • Maple syrup
  • Plain milk and yogurt

Flavored milk and yogurt are high in sugar because these dairy products already contain natural sugars.
