Keeping Stress Under Control


One thing certain about stress is that it will continue to pop up in all of our lives over time. Just like our personal reactions to stress vary, our methods of managing stress are different. When dealing with any new challenge, good or bad, developing "de-stress" techniques can minimize the harmful effects of stress. Here are some tried and true things that work and can build up your resilience to stressors:

  • Consider change to be a normal and challenging part of life.
  • Solve the little problems -- feeling capable of solving small issues builds confidence to tackle larger ones.
  • Find a healthy dose of optimism -- it takes practice for those that may frequently see the glass as half empty.
  • Be realistic -- don't expect yourself or anyone else to be perfect.
  • Have a support system, and ASK FOR HELP -- recognize when it might be time to seek professional help.
  • Find ways to relax -- try reading, a bath, spending time with your pet, find a new hobby or take time to enjoy the ones you already have. These are just a few but anything that makes you relax will work (unless it is unhealthy!)
  • Get a good night's sleep.  Know how much sleep your body requires to feel rested in the morning, and try to stick to a schedule.
  • Make goals and keep track of your progress. Reward yourself for a job well done.
  • Believe in yourself. We are often our own worst critics.
  • Finally, treat your body well! A healthy lifestyle that includes foods rich in nutrients and regular physical activity are essential in managing stress and having the body ready to resist stress and bounce back from it.
