Participating in a regular and consistent exercise program is one of the most important things you can do for your body and its ability to keep you strong and agile. There is not one particular exercise that helps balance. A combination of exercises that focus on core and leg strength, as well as standing and moving balance drills, help the body to incorporate all of the muscles and joints needed for movement. For example, a balance drill that makes you stop abruptly teaches the body how to respond if the cat unexpectedly walks in front of you or there is something on the floor that is out of place. Of course, all exercises should be chosen carefully to coincide with your abilities and should progress as your strength and confidence increase. Don’t try anything new that can put you at risk without supervision. Seeking the advice and guidance of a certified fitness professional is best (either one–on–one or a group class).
