Notes

Camp Planet D, a residential camp program for children with diabetes, was established in 1975 and serves 135 children and teens each year. So far we have reached over 3500 campers. The American Diabetes Association is the largest provider of camps for children with diabetes. Programs are conducted in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, benefiting over 6,000 children annually. The diabetes camp program in the Kansas City area, Camp Planet D, is the only residential camp in the area designed for, and dedicated to, children and teens living with diabetes. Camp offers children with diabetes the opportunity to learn how to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle while managing their diabetes. At Camp Planet D, children are surrounded by people who face the same challenge of living with diabetes, from fellow campers to adult staff members. Our long term collaboration with Children Mercy Hospital (CMH) has led to the program’s continued success. CMH provides medical camp staff including nurses, endocrinologists, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists and dietitians. CMH donation of staff time and services for camp provides our campers and their families with peace of mind, and the support needed to learn better diabetes self-management skills. As a result, our camper’s leave camp with increased self-confidence, independence, and improved diabetes management.
