Notes

Since 1990, STRIDE has been taking groups of youth athletes on monthly camping trips throughout the summer. During June-September, campers with special needs are paired with adult volunteers for a weekend of fun at upstate New York State Parks. Campers enjoy outdoor activities such as beach swimming, kayaking, fishing, archery, hiking, and campfires. Meals are cooked around the campfire, and activities shared under a huge tarped campsite. Children share tents with other students with adult volunteers safely nearby. Medical staff is present on most trips. The Emma Treadwell Nature Center at Thompsons Lake Park has been delighting campers for years with nature presentations on wildlife, active beehives, astronomy and reptiles.

In July, an adventure trip is taken deep in the north Adirondack Mountains to John Dillon Camp near Tupper Lake. Campers sleep in lean-tos with carry-in and out gear. Food is locked in bear-free boxes, and activities are nature driven on a pristine, secluded lake. The call of loons at night lulls a non-nervous camper to sleep!

There is a maximum of 20 campers per trip. Camping trips runs RAIN OR SHINE.

Campers need to bring their sleeping and personal gear and must be comfortable sleeping in a tent with peers. Equipment and tents are provided by STRIDE.

There is no charge for this program. However, a $50 donation is suggested.

Reservations for each child must be made no later than two weeks prior to the trip.

By registering, you secure a spot for the entire weekend. Due to the large number of repeat requests for this program, campers will be selected on a rotational basis so we can accommodate more children.
