Notes

The one 2 one inclusive recreation program is offered through the Yakima County Parent to Parent program at Children's Village. one 2 one trains teen volunteers to become mentors to kids with disabilities. Mentors help support the kids during participation in community recreation activities such as swimming lessons, softball games, and teen club activities. Prior to becoming a one 2 one mentor, the following process must be completed:

  • Attend a five-hour training session that focuses on team building, disability awareness, communication techniques, and positive support practices.

  • Complete an application process that includes a recreational interest survey, background clearance, and two personal references.

Once the above items are completed the one 2 one coordinator helps match interests of the mentor with a child in need of recreational support. The mentor will meet with the family and the child to get to know them, then will begin mentoring. The time commitment required varies according to recreational opportunities chosen. No program fees apply for the volunteer mentor.
