Notes

Awakenings Institute is a non-profit community based organization that serves individuals with both physical disabilities and chronic diseases. This facility provides affordable and accessible post-acute rehabilitation, as well as specialized fitness and wellness programs to individuals that are afflicted with a chronic disease and/or have a physical disability. The goal of Awakenings Institute is to improve the functional abilities, the quality of life and level of independence of its clients while helping to prevent secondary illness and complications related to each client’s primary condition through improved health and fitness. The facility is committed to improving the quality of life for those individuals that have physical disabilities and chronic disease.

Awakenings Health Institute provides an intensive exercise program for Neurological Disorders, primarily for Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. This non-traditional program is structured to give the individual the opportunity to experience various treatments such as functional training, standard personal training, nutrition, and alternative medicine.

People with spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cerebral palsy, etc. should be encouraged to exercise. Specialized exercise programs that improve mobility are particularly valuable for these disorders. People with neurological disorders who exercise experience less spasticity as well as reduction in — and even reversal of — muscle atrophy. In addition, the psychological benefits of exercise are extremely important in managing these disorders.
