Notes

Camp Black Hawk is a coed summer camp for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Three or four campers of similar age and interests are paired with one terrific camp counselor. This small group becomes good friends in a very short period of time, and works together to plan their activity schedule.

Each camper is given just the right support to encourage involvement, but allowed the independence needed to boost their self esteem and pride in their own accomplishments. By combining well trained staff, lots of fun summer activities and a camp director with more than 15 years experience supporting people with disabilities, we are sure Camp Black Hawk will be the highlight of every camper's summer!

Activities include:
  • Water Activities - There is no better way to cool off on a hot summer day than to take a dip in the pool. Our swimming pool is equipped with a ramp to ensure wheel chair accessibility. Campers enjoy floating in pool, playing a game of beach ball volleyball or just splashing around with friends. Campers who don't want to get into the pool often enjoy sitting under the shade umbrellas and squirting passerby's with a squirt gun. Our young campers paint the sidewalks with water "paint".
  • Sports - We have a large field that is perfect for most sports. We play modified baseball, soccer, volleyball, Frisbee and even parachute games. Our main pavilion offers a great shaded spot for viewing the sports being played in our main field. It's never about winning and losing, just ensuring that everyone has a great time!
  • Socializing - Making new friends and spending time with old friends is fun for everyone. We have lots of board games including, checkers, Connect Four, Jenga, Sorry, Yahtee, and Boggle as well as card games. Campers may enjoy putting together a puzzle or just catching up on the past years events with friends that they haven't seen in a while or new friends they have just met.
  • Crafts - We offer activities that are geared for all ages from painting to puppets.
  • Cooking - Who doesn't like the smell of fresh baked cookies or brownies? It is even more fun when you bake them your self and help decorate them. The evening dessert is often made or decorated by campers during the day.
  • Music - Music is a daily part of camp life. Whether we are listening to music, singing songs or making our own music, music tends to bring a smile to the face.
  • Large Group - Getting everyone together for a large group activity is sure to be exciting. Every evening after dinner everyone meets for a large group activity such as a dance, carnival night, camp fire, skit night etc.
  • Memory keeper - Having a great time and building memories to last a life time is a major goal of camp. We understand that with so many fun things going on, it is hard to remember everything done at camp, and even harder for campers to share this fun with others. That is why we utilize digital photos and journaling to help campers share their experience at camp with others. Every camper adds pictures and stories to their camp journal daily and will go home with a memory book that they will enjoy going through for years to come.
