Sandra Fortuna has been teaching people with disabilities how to do ballroom and Latin dancing using a wheelchair for three years. She has conducted several training sessions for dance teachers to learn how to teach a six dance social program. She has been hosting social wheelchair dance classes at Universal Dance Center.
Using the wheelchair for mobility while dancing is terrific fun. It's a very physical activity that not only encourages contact and expression, but supports social interaction between the able-bodied and disabled communities.
People with paraplegia or quadriplegia can participate. Some of our dancers use manual chairs, some of our dancers use power chairs. Some who normally use walkers, use a manual chair for dancing. Some of the ladies who normally use power chairs dance in their manual chairs.
