Notes

The U Kan Ski Clinic is designed to bring water recreation and sports to individuals with physical disabilities. The U Kan Ski Clinic was organized and implemented for several years in the late 1990’s and the year 2000. It was resurrected in 2004 under the banner of UCO Disabled Sports & Events. In 2004, 31 participants had the opportunity to attend this exciting event.

The fee to participate is $30. This includes at least one round of skiing, lunch, courtesy of O’Connell’s and a t-shirt. In addition to the clinic, games will be conducted throughout the day, and a pontoon boat will be available to take spectators out on the lake.

The clinic will use a combination of boats and Sea Doos to create teams consisting of physical, occupational, recreation therapists, nurses, and various other volunteers, to make sure safety to the skier remains of the utmost importance. Adaptive water-skiing consist of the ski itself and the "cage", a seat with padded sides and a sling to support the skiers’ hips. There is a bar in front to hold the legs in a tucked position and front slip to slide the skiers’ feet into. The ski is 13–17 inches wide and over six feet in length. The "cage" is placed toward the back half of the ski. This is where the participant will be located on the ski. The "cage" or seat may be adjusted to meet the skier’s individual skiing style, skier weight and boat speed. Further information concerning the physical appearance of the ski may be found at www.sunrisemedical.com.
