Notes

The mission of Wagon Road Summer Day Camp is to provide a quality day camp experience while bringing together a diverse group of children from Westchester County and New York City. With special programming, we seek to build relationships, understanding, and citizenship among our campers.

Our program is co-ed for children ages 6 to 13. Youngsters are placed in small groups according to age and gender, and are supervised by qualified counselors. The size of each group allows for full participation and for relationships to form among the campers.

The camp program features horsemanship, adventure ropes course activities, athletics, drama, dance, music, nature study, gardening, cooking, and arts & crafts. Trained and experienced staff supervise these activities. The Swimming program features free swim and swim instruction taught by Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors.

There are also performance days where campers develop performances around specific themes (Banermania, Hurray for Hollywood, A Summer of Shakespeare). They work with the performance arts specialists to develop routines to perform for their peers. In addition there are special guest performers, an optional overnight, and a carnival that ends the season. As our campers come from different communities in NYC and Westchester, the camp provides a rich multicultural experience.

The Respite Program provides year-round camping experiences for children with physical and developmental disabilities whose families would otherwise not be able to afford such specialized programming. Through a combination of Children's Aid Society scholarships and New York State Funds, children ages 7-17 with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disability, and neurological impairments spend their week- and weekend-long breaks at Wagon Road. We offer 40 campers per session the unique opportunity to participate in many of the same camp activities available to their more able-bodied peers.

Respite campers are constantly challenging themselves by participating in all kinds of new activities. Swimming in our heated pool equipped with a wheelchair ramp and waterproof mobile chairs, and horseback riding with special saddles designed to accommodate orthopedic impairments are favorite activities for children with disabilities. These activities and other outdoor activities foster physical strength, balance and agility, and most importantly, boost confidence and self-esteem.

In addition to the physical, emotional and social benefits Wagon Road offers disabled children, it allows for a respite break for the whole family. For parents, siblings and other caretakers, the stresses of caring for a child with disabilities can be overwhelming. The Wagon Road Respite Program allows families a much-needed time to rest and refuel so that they can continue to provide their children with the support they need.
