Notes

Hozhoni Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program at Sage Memorial Hospital provides therapeutic riding services and equestrian related activities to children and adults with disabilities. We are located in the heart of the Navajo Reservation in Ganado, Arizona. We are one of a handful of hospital-based programs throughout the United States and Canada. In harmony with Navajo traditional practices, horses are used as part of the healing process for children and adults with a wide variety of disabling conditions.

Hozhoni utilizes a multi-team approach with North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), Riding Instructor and Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapists. Our volunteers come from a variety of walks of life including educators, staff members of Sage Memorial Hospital and local community individuals. We serve individuals with cerebral palsy, Navajo neuropathy, Down syndrome, traumatic brain injury, learning disabilities, speech delay, and children who are at risk.

The Navajo tradition teaches all people to find peace and harmony by respecting everything in the world and on the land. This is called "Hozho" which means "Walking in Beauty". It is a goal to live each minute of each day walking in beauty. Our program mission is dedicated to affording persons with disabilities to grow as they walk in beauty.

We invite you to be a partner in the sacredness of walking in beauty with the Hozhoni Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program. It is the only therapeutic horseback riding program on the Navajo Nation. We are proud of our accomplishments and growth. We invite you to invest in our students' future of walking in beauty.
