Craig's "T. Rec." Programs

For more than three decades, Craigs recreational programs have set the standard for rehab hospital recreation programs in the U.S., and our 10 nationally certified specialists have more than 203 years of combined experience.

At Craig Hospital, we understand that leisure-time activities help define who we are. Recreation is "re-creation", helping to give life fullness and meaning and keep people healthy. We have seen, over and over again, patients make dramatic improvement in their rehabilitation program after they have rediscovered their leisure-time activities. Our goal is to see that patients are given a chance to participate in a wide variety of satisfying recreational endeavors, because we know that fun is serious business.

Our former patients have discovered that there are no limits to their recreational opportunities. They have participated in everything from parasailing to luxury cruises to deep-sea diving. Their discovery began at Craig.

We have a new therapeutic recreation center with a horticultural center, pool table, kiln for pottery, ping-pong table, small theater T.V., and lots more. Craig has a full-court gymnasium, swimming pool, listening room with stereo, recreational information library, and weight-training room. In addition, we have various pieces of equipment that patients can try, including all-terrain vehicles, equestrian gear, hand-propelled three-wheeled cycles, stained glass equipment, and radio-controlled sailboats.

We offer patients regular outings to the community (lectures, movies, professional sporting events, etc.). Outings and activities are conducted by trained staff to ensure the safety and appropriateness of each. The activities Craig offers (depending on the season) include the following:
  • aquatics
  • leather crafts
  • basketball
  • painting
  • camping
  • photography
  • canoeing
  • picnicking
  • catamaran sailing
  • radio-controlled, miniature sailboat racing
  • ceramics
  • snow skiing
  • kayaking
  • cycling
  • tennis
  • fishing
  • waterskiing
  • hiking
  • wheelchair sports
  • horseback riding
  • white-water rafting
  • horticulture and gardening
  • hot-air ballooning
  • hunting
Patients not only learn how to enjoy these activities, but also how to adapt equipment to meet new physical needs, incorporating key therapeutic elements acquired from other therapeutic disciplines. Individual needs and interests are always taken into consideration for outings and activities, with program and equipment adaptations tailored for individual needs.
