Notes

Horseback riding as therapy is unique in its opportunity to provide intensive physical therapy, while also emphasizing developmental, recreational and social skills.

The benefits of horseback riding are as numerous as the types of disabilities and conditions served. Research shows that students who participate in therapeutic riding experience physical, emotional and mental rewards. For individuals with mental or emotional disabilities, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increased confidence, patience and self-esteem. The physical benefits: "A horse makes your whole body respond in a smoothly rhythmic, progressive way" Dr. Louis Wagner. This gives freedom of movement to many. "Therapeutic riding transcends traditional therapeutic methods and provides people with the joy of participation in a program that offers social, athletic and personal rewards, while providing benefits as well." Robert T. Kramer, Chief, Dept. of Pediatrics. Their horses are donated from many different back grounds. They undergo testing and training to ensure compatibility with the unique demands of their new work. The horses are chosen for each rider based on the benefits each individual needs by trained, knowledgeable instructors.
