As a child, summer camp can be one of the most exciting times of the year. In order to meet the specific needs of children with asthma, the American Lung Association of the City of New York hosts the Asthma Camp Experience.
Each year, children with moderate asthma are invited to attend this one-week, sleep-away camp in Pennsylvania. The camp welcomes boys and girls between the ages of eight through thirteen. Their specially-trained medical staff, consisting of physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists, is housed at the camp and is on-call 24 hours a day.
In addition to offering traditional camping activities, children learn to cope with their asthma by participating in asthma education activities. Not only does the Asthma Camp Experience provide children with asthma the opportunity to attend camp, but it also teaches them valuable skills to manage their asthma, which will lead to enjoying healthier lives.
