Founded in 1958, Camp Carowanis is a very special camp for boys and girls with diabetes.
The campsite spreads over 150 acres of wooded land on the shores of Lake Didi near Ste-Agathe-des-Monts in the Laurentians, approximately 85 km from Montreal.
The Infirmary provides specialized medical care supervised by doctors and nurses. It serves as a clinic and school. The campers test at least 3 times a day under supervision and learn to administer their own insulin injections on rotating sites. Doctors and nurses teach them how to adjust their insulin doses as needed and how to recognize and treat reactions. In collaboration with doctors, individual diets are prepared by a team of dieticians who also teach campers about the relative value of different foods.
A well-rounded program of activities and athletics supervised by a high ratio of counsellors to campers. 2 or 3 week periods are available depending on the camper's age.
The camp program is supervised by a director, his assistant and a team of senior section and program leaders. The counsellors, many of whom are diabetics and former campers, are chosen for their special abilities and knowledge.
