Members of the community with disabilities can take to the water through the Brooks Adaptive Rowing Program at the Negaard Rowing Center on the Jacksonville University (JU) campus. Thanks to a partnership between JU, Brooks, and the City of Jacksonville, the Negaard Rowing Center, a new 15,000 square-foot, fully-accessible Rowing Center , was built on the JU campus on the site of the Russell Boat House.
Training for both athletes and volunteers is held on Sunday mornings. The athletes first learn the rowing technique on the indoor rowing machine (known as the ergometer or "erg") before advancing to the water in a double shell (a two person boat) with an experienced rower/coach. If the participant chooses, he or she may advance to rowing in a single shell (a one person boat). In addition, adaptive rowers may participate on a recreational or competitive level.
