The Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation program now offers adaptive group exercise and fitness classes for persons living with disabilities. Each of these programs is adapted for wheelchair users as well as those that need assistance with balance or ambulation. In partnership with the YMCA of Florida�s First Coast, the adaptive fitness program includes group exercise classes, such as adaptive t�ai chi, Zumba� (latin-style aerobics), aquatics and stroke wellness. The classes occur weekly at the Brooks Family YMCA and will give those with a physical disability the opportunity to improve their fitness level and have fun while doing it!

Multiple Sclerosis Fitness
This one-hour class is designed for those with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), to provide cardiovascular fitness, strength-training, balance activities, and flexibility exercises. There is no program or membership fee to persons with MS in the community that could benefit. Classes are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3 at the Brooks Family YMCA.

Adaptive T'ai Chi Chih
Based on ancient principles of movement, breach and focus of consciousness, t'ai chi, offers individuals with a physical disability the benefits of improved physical, social, emotional health and well-being. Beginning September 23rd, enjoy an 8-week adaptive Qi Qong course in T'ai Chi Chih taught by Carol Kines, Certified Qi Qong instructor for 17 years.

Adaptive Zumba
Providing a fun environment to improve fitness through latin dance, Zumba�, incorporates moves from salsa, merengue and the cha cha. This program is adapted for wheelchair users and those that need assistance with balance or ambulation. Classes are from 2-3pm and will be taught by Dave Dawley, Zumba Fitness� and Zumba Gold� instructor. Join us for a high-energy class using latin styles of music and dance. There is no program or membership fee to physically disabled persons in the community that could benefit from this class.

Adaptive Aquatics
The adaptive aquatics class held at Brooks Family YMCA helps improve balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination through exercises in the water. The 6-week class takes place on Thursdays from 12-1:30 in the main pool, lanes 1-2. The instructors for the class are Joan Coffman and Patricia Senory-Lord. There is no program or membership fee to physically disabled persons in the community that could benefit from aqua exercise.

Stroke Wellness Program
Brooks Rehabilitation is proud to offer a Stroke Wellness Program, which provides patients with customized exercise programs and nutrition education to support the goal of restoring strength, endurance and agility after a stroke. Designed by the Brooks team of stroke experts, this program is the only one of its kind in Jacksonville.
