Windsor Mountain welcomes children from around the world and from many walks of life. In 1999 we launched our American Sign Language program which makes it possible for Deaf and hard of hearing students to participate in our summer camp program. It is fun for our hearing campers who want to learn ASL, and it is fun for our Deaf campers who want to be part of a mainstreamed learning environment. The ASL department at Windsor Mountain now includes Deaf staff, Deaf campers and interpreters, many of whom are in training at the University of Southern Maine and earning academic credits as they complete internships through our ASL program.
Finding opportunities for cultural exchange is a fundamental goal of the Windsor mountain curriculum. Bringing Deaf and hearing children together to build bridges of friendship and understanding is a beautiful metaphor for our larger efforts and is a beautiful thing to watch. Children learn from and teach each other while realizing that seemingly large differences are often quite small.
Please contact us for more information if you are an interpreter or if your child is Deaf and is interested in joining this program; typically, in our larger community of 150 hearing campers we include 8 Deaf campers, 2 Deaf staff members and up to 13 interpreters. We would love to hear from you.
