WAMP Inc. provides residential adventure programs for youth with physical challenges such as Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Cord Injuries and Cerebral Palsy in the High Sierras of California.

WAMP participants experience a transforming change in skills, capabilities, and attitudes. As one participant stated, I now realize that Im NOT just handicapped, Ive got so many things to do and accomplish! The objectives and outcomes of WAMP, for each participant, include but are not limited to:

  • Develop physical competencies
  • Develop compensating skills and confidence
  • Develop outdoor experiences and skills
  • Learn about the natural environment
  • Foster emotional, social, and physical independence
  • Develop a sense of personal worth and self-acceptance
  • Realize that there are clear opportunities for a normal life
  • Increase overall physical, leisure, and social capabilities

The degrees of personal development are measured by witnessing the participants throughout the program and the feedback from the children parents or guardian after they have returned home. The hope and confidence realized is truly amazing. There are no other wilderness experiences that can match the value of such an achievement and transformational experience. WAMP programs are the catalyst in the development of self-confidence and motivation leading to increased optimism toward achievement in life.

Through our programs and development of volunteer and professional staff, WAMP strives to increase the awareness and acceptance of children with special needs in all community throughout California. WAMP, Inc. in partnership with the agencies like the City of Sacramento, Yosemite National Institute, and Environmental Travel Companions strives to offer unique opportunities to children that deserve a rich and fulfilling life.

Activities may include but not limited to; rock climbing, cycling, fishing, swimming, boating, arts and crafts, nature walks and other special environmental educational activities.

WAMP programs for children with physical challenges are five to seven days in length. Program sessions run from July through August each year. In addition, other programs are always being evaluated and if they meet the WAMP standards, they will be allocated a number of free sponsored scholarships.
