Heritage Christian Stables in Webster, New York is home to the area's best therapeutic riding program. Each year, hundreds of children and adults with developmental disabilities experience the world from horseback.
With the assistance of highly trained riding instructors, physical therapists, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers, this program provides an exciting opportunity for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth.
A day habilitation program located at the stables allows other adults with special needs the opportunity to help care for the horses used in the riding program. Day program participants gain necessary work skills and have an opportunity to interact with animals and members of the community.
The continued success of this program relies heavily on volunteers. Many riders require three volunteers supporting them - one "sidewalker" on each side of the horse and one "horse handler" guiding the animal forward and tacking up the horse for the day's lesson. Volunteers may also help riders groom and tack the horse. Previous horse experience is needed to become a horse handler, however, experience is not required to become a sidewalker. We will provide the necessary training.
