General Description
The Gulf Islands National Seashore is one of ten seashores in the national park system. The park is divided into two main districts one in Florida (Gulf Breeze)and the other in Mississippi (Ocean Springs) headquarters locations. It consists of miles of open beaches composed of beautiful white sand. Wheelchairs designed for beach use are available on request in the park as well. There are also a number of walking trails found throughout the park along with historic structures such as Fort Pickens, Fort Barrancas, and Fort Massachusetts. In the Naval Live Oaks reservation area there is an accessible trail designed specifically for wheelchair use. There are also exhibits in the visitor center relating to the live oak in culture and history which take into account the needs of the physically challenged. An orientation film about the park is available for viewing in both districts and is accessible to visual and hearing impaired visitors.
