General Description
Snakeden Hollow Fish and Wildlife Area was established in 1987 when the State of Illinois acquired the 2,470 acre site from a mining company. The area had been strip-mined for coal from 1962 through 1970. The State of Illinois has successfully transformed the mining area into croplands, grasslands, forests, and marshes. This park has 125 lakes and ponds that total 400 acres. Bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, muskie, trout, and walleye can be found in at least 3 dozen of the parks ponds and lakes.

This area is also home to an abundant flock of Canada geese. Deer, dove, goose, and teal hunting are permitted during specified seasons. Boating, hiking, picnicking, and wildlife observation are other popular activities at Snakeden Hollow.
