General Description
In April 1909 the Plaquemine Lock opened its gates for shipping. The lock allowed commercial vessels to travel between the Mississippi River region and the Atchafalaya Basin, originally for the logging industry. Boats passing through the lock was most often paddlewheelers but invention of tugboats revolutionized shipping. During World War II the lock became a major part of the Intracoastal Waterway and became a short-cut to Texas, but it also became too small. The Port Allen Lock was completed in 1961 replacing our structure. Today the site gives visitors a unique look at early 20th century navigation. Site features include a short film, guided tour of the lock house, view of the Mississippi River and lock chamber, and several examples of boats used along the Atchafalaya Basin.
