General Description
Vicksburg National Military Park was created in 1899 to commemmorate the Civil War Vicksburg Campaign of 1863, which culminated with the surrender of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. The surrender of Vicksburg and 5 days later Port Hudson enabled the Union Army to control the Mississippi River. Coupled with the Defeat of Gen. Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg on July 1-3, marked a critical turning point in the Civil War. Today Vicksburg National Military Park has a Visitor center which houses some exhibits, introductory movie, a bookstore, and restrooms. There is a 16 mile driving tour through one of the most heavily monumented military parks in the world. Half way through the park is the USS Cairo Gunboat exhibit and Museum. The USS Cairo is the only surviving Civil War City Class Gunboat in existence. The museum has many artifacts on exhibit from the gunboat, a bookstore and restrooms.
