General Description
Located in South Mountain Park/Preserve, the South Mountain Environmental Education Center (SMEEC) is operated by the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department’s Natural Resources Division. SMEEC provides a variety of ranger-led programs and recreational opportunities to over a million visitors each year. At almost 17,000 acres, South Mountain Park/Preserve is the largest municipal park in the country, and one of the largest in the world. SMEEC serves as a window to the preserve, providing visitors an introduction to the area’s natural environment and cultural history. Just outside SMEEC’s doorway is the accessible Judith Tunell Trail, which consists of two, -mile loops made of stabilized granite. One of a handful of accessible trails within the city, the trail boasts interpretive signs, water fountains, benches, three shade ramadas, and a bridge over a wash. At SMEEC, visitors may check out wheelchairs for use on the trail, as well as Braille booklets that provide a translation of the interpretive signs found along the route.
