The Whitewater Recreation Area and Catwalk National Recreation Trail has recently been transformed with a new metal walkway and interpretive panels. The "old trail" and the "new universally accessible trail" are now open. It is a day-use area and is open from sunrise to sunset. The 1.1 million dollar rehabilitation and expansion project was begun in November 2002. A parking fee of $3.00 per vehicle is to be paid at a self-pay station in the parking lot. A major feature of the Glenwood District is the historically intriguing Catwalk National Scenic Trail. The area offers a beautiful picnic spot next to Whitewater Creek, a challenging one mile trail along the historic water line route from the 1890''s, a trailhead access into the Gila Wilderness, a bird watcher''s paradise and a sense of place that creates images of an earlier time. The Catwalk has undergone extensive construction to upgrade the facilities and add an accessible trail that meets universal design standards.
