General Description
Whitman Mission is the site of a Christian mission to the Cayuse people. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman lived and worked here from 1836 until killed by a few of the Cayuse in 1847. A measles epidemic swept through the area in the fall of 1847, and the Cayuse blamed doctor Whitman for the epidemic. Of the 75 people here at the time, 14 died, a few escaped, and almost 50 were held hostage until ransomed by the Husdon''s Bay Company a month after the killings.
