General Description
    Fort Smith National Historic Site is located on 35 acres in downtown Fort Smith Arkansas. It includes the remains of two frontier forts,a site on the Trail of Tears and the location of the court for the Western District of Arkansas which had jurisdiction over the Indian Territory from 1872 to 1896. It tells the story of the Native Americans, the military from 1817 to 1871 including the civil war and the deputies, outlaws and court officials who tried to maintain law and order in this part of the old west. Judge Isaac Parker, commonly referred to as the "hanging judge", served for 21 years here.
