General Description
Stones River National Battlefield commemorates the Civil War battle that began a federal offensive to trisect the Confederacy. More than 81,000 soldiers fought in this midwinter battle. With more than 23,000 casualties, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The Union victory allowed the army to construct Fortress Rosecrans and set the stage for the advance on Chattanooga and Atlanta. The park includes a visitor center with a museum, film, and bookstore. The battlefield may be viewed along a driving tour route or trails. The oldest intact Civil War monument, the Hazen Brigade Monument, is located here, along with the remains of Fortress Rosecrans, one of the largest earthen forts built during the war.
