General Description
Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site commemorates the achievements of one of the most significant American women of the twentieth century. Val-Kill, built in 1924 on the Roosevelt estate two miles east of the Home of FDR, was Eleanor Roosevelt’s place. It reflected her style and interests, and provided a space where she could live on her own terms. The personal freedom that Eleanor Roosevelt enjoyed at Val-Kill fostered her intellectual and emotional growth as an individual and encouraged her to engage visitors from all walks of life and from around the world in an exchange of ideas on a wide variety of issues, such as human and civil rights and world peace.
