Description
  • What is Therapeutic Riding?

Therapeutic riding and other equine assisted activities benefit those with cognitive, physical and psychological disabilities. Riding a horse has been shown to improve coordination, balance and posture and it helps the student to develop better self-awareness and self-esteem. When a horse walks, its three dimensional pelvic movement resembles that of the human gait and cannot be replicated by conventional physical therapy in a clinical setting. This movement has a dynamic effect on the riders body that increases muscle strength and joint mobility.

Customized equine assisted activities require concentration and enable many students to improve their ability to organize information and gain greater communication and memory skills. Lessons are fun, challenging and deliver social interaction with peers, volunteers and instructors. These relationships provide a supportive environment in which many students thrive.

All equine assisted activities are supervised by NARHA Certified instructors and may be assisted by up to three trained volunteers per student.

Loudoun Therapeutic Riding (LTRF) is dedicated to empowering and enriching the lives of individuals with physical, cognitive or psychological challenges through the benefits of horseback riding, carriage driving or other equine assisted activities.

LTRF was formed in 1974 to foster and encourage the development and operation of horseback riding and other related activities for therapeutic purposes for individuals with disabilities, including those who have intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional/ learning disabilities, speech or hearing impairments, visual impairments and multiple-disabilities.
