Description
Sherwood Center provides effective and innovative educational and therapeutic services for children and adults with autism. Today's enrollment also includes persons with related disabilities in communication and behavior. Since 1974, hundreds of children and adults have made dramatic improvements in learning, language, and social development at Sherwood Center.
Notes
Special Education Classes (ages 3-21)
Early Childhood Education (ages 2-5) These classes offer a well-rounded curriculum, encompassing communication, daily living skills, academics, social skills, and community-based instruction taught with a variety of methods including computer-assisted study. Each student's educational program is individually designed by parents and professionals. Individual progress is measured in terms of his or her own achievements. Educational programs may include any services available in Sherwood Center and are implemented through the methods described under method.
Daily Habilitative Training (DHT)(ages21+)
These programs for adults are individually designed by parents and professionals through a person-centered planning process. The DHT program offers both on- and off-site interest-area opportunities. Agency based projects include recreation and leisure activities (music appreciation and enjoyment, computer lab, video game entertainment, board and card games, puzzles, personal care, art, exercise) as well as live and work skills.
Adult participants spend time in the community pursuing individual interest areas.
Adaptive Physical Education
Provides general physical development, motor skills training, recreation and leisure opportunities, and promotes social interactions. Available to students and adult participants.
Essential Lifestyle Planning
Outlines goals and individual preferences so that support plans can be developed. Ongoing meetings ensure understanding and consitency for everyone involved.
Communication Evaluations
Determines skill levels and communication system sets, and offers limited opportunities to check out adaptive devices from the Assistive Technology Department at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Assistive Technology Evaluations
Determines current skill levels and the need for adaptive equipment.
Related Services Needs
Speech and language therapy, occupation therapy and other needs are determined on an individual basis and are provided through local school districts or Medicaid.
ALL SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE ON A 12-MONTH BASIS WITH LOW LEARNER-TO-INSTRUCTOR RATIOS AND CERTIFIED, SPECIALLY TRAINED STAFF.
