Description
  • North East Westchester Special Recreation, established in the early 1970's is a community based therapeutic recreation agency serving children and adults with developmental disabilities in the north east portion of Westchester County. North East is the second largest agency of its kind in the State of New York and has gained local and state-wide attention for the quality and novelty of programs and services.

North East Westchester Special Recreation is a non-profit agency. We receive funding from the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, municipal assessments, program fees and donations. Fund raising activities allow us to expand upon our program options and offer programming to more individuals in need of services.

Notes

They provide a variety of recreation programming for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Their programs are offered to individuals based on age and ability. Please be sure to check the website for program updates or schedules.

Persons interested in joining their programs for the first time, must go through the initial intake process. This includes filing a Participant Information Form, completion of medical form by your family physician and a personal consultation with one of their full time staff to plan for the program needs of the applicant and his/her family.

Programming is available weekday afternoons, evenings and on Saturdays. They offer aquatics programming, Special Olympics training in a variety of sports, social activities, weekend away trips and daily outings. Their program selection may change from year to year and season to season. Since they are community based, programs are scheduled in the twelve communities that they serve based on the needs of a program and the availability of a particular facility. Some transportation may be provided from one program to the next, however, participants must be transported to and from program by their parents and/or guardians.

A moderate fee structure exists for most programs. These fees are a small percent of the actual program costs. All program fees must be paid in full at the time of registration unless you have been approved for a payment plan. When necessary, payment schedules may be arranged and partial scholarships are available on a limited basis to those participants in the North East district.
