Description
  • On the local level, many organizations are developing integrated programs for community residents with and without disabilities. Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation (MASR), one such organization in central Maine, provides opportunities for people with disabilities to learn a variety of recreational activities. In addition, MASR works with community recreation providers to teach them how to include people with disabilities in their programs. Each program began with an instructional clinic to introduce both disabled and non-disabled community members to a specific activity.

Today Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation (MASR) is a state-wide, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive opportunities to people with disabilities to improve the quality of their lives physically, emotionally, and socially through active participation in sports and recreation programs.

Now in it's sixth year of operation, MASR operates in 40 communities in Maine and offers over 14 community-based programs that actively involve individuals with disabilities in sports and recreation programs. In Bangor and the surrounding communities alone, it's programs have served over 200 young people with disabilities. Since their establishment in 1994, MASR has served over 1,000 children and adults in Maine with a variety of disabilities that include spinal cord injures, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, hearing and vision impairments, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, and other disabilities including developmental disabilities such as autism.
