Description
  • The Alaska Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, located in Anchorage, Alaska, is a private nonprofit agency that offers a variety of ways to promote independence by residential as well as community-based persons who are blind or visually impaired. New and evolving technologies combined with time-tested adaptive methods, individual attention, and personalized instruction provide those without full vision many opportunities for successful independent living. Family members and friends are also invited to learn ways to support and assist their impaired loved ones.

Center-based classes for Day as well as Residential clients include:
    • Activities of Daily Living (personal, home, and financial management)
    • Braille
    • Assistive Technology such as use of computers and other equipment to support a wide variety of activities
    • Manual Skills to improve dexterity and increase self-confidence; and
    • Orientation and Mobility for safe travel in residential as well as business areas.
To better serve those wishing to receive instruction in the comfort of their own homes and communities, the Center offers a special Distance Education Program providing training in the use of computers and other assistive technology. This component will expand and change in response to the needs of those being served. The Center also offers: low vision assessments to determine the extent of remaining sight and the devices that will maximize it; a special Older Blind program to address the needs and issues of those age 55 and up; home- and community-based guidance and training; a unique program for rural Alaska Native students called the Youth in Transition Program; the sale of aids and appliances to enrich quality of life; information and referral; regular Support Groups; and consultation, workshops, and other tailored presentations on ways to promote independence for the blind and visually impaired. All of these ways are designed to provide each individual with the opportunity to acquire new skills in a manner that enhances dignity and respect while reducing limitations and barriers to participation in personal activities as well as family and community life.
