Activities for Improving Health-Related Fitness
This section has a particular emphasis on inclusive physical fitness activities that can be performed by all children, including children with disabilities. Because of the many and varied disabilities that are seen in children, it would be impossible to develop adaptations for every condition. Therefore, the main focus of this section was to take a more generic approach and classify children with disabilities into two categories: physical disabilities and intellectual disabilities.
It was important for us to develop activities that can be used on a day-to-day basis in regular and adapted physical education programs. Many physical therapists serve as consultants to school districts and are in constant search for ideas and activities that they can give to teachers to be used with their clientele. Many of the suggested fitness activities are practical in nature and can be implemented in both regular and adapted physical education programs.
