Campus Accessibility

Campus Accessibility is a high priority and it makes UAMS easy to navigate on foot, in a wheelchair, scooter, or even on a gurney. The Spine Center pools and Reynolds Institute on Aging are completely accessible, providing anyone with a disability full access to the excellent facilities. This was a challenge since the medical center is built on rolling hills, putting ground level of the garage two levels below the ground entry of the adjoining cancer center. However, with careful planning and execution, all facilities can be accessed by elevator, ramp, and level walkways.

    Valet parking
  • All campus facilities and lots are well marked with ample parking
  • Enclosed bridges connect adjoining buildings, thus eliminating challenges for pedestrian traffic over hills and uneven terrain.
  • Seniors at the fitness center have free parking.
  • Built in curb cuts, railings on inclines, ramps, and automatic doors on campus make navigation easy and safe.
  • Chauffeured golf carts transport people around the medical center for anyone who cannot walk between facilities.
  • There is a centrally located valet for individuals requiring assistance. (E Valet)

With campus expansion, the UAMS team is constantly observing, checking suggestions, and implementing improvements for patients, families, and staff alike.

In the pool area, accessibility, safety, and comfort are keys to ease of use.

  • Pool water kept at a constant temperature of 90 degrees
  • Wheelchair ramps, stairs, and railings provide safety and easy access.
  • Waterproof wheelchairs are available in the pool area (and if you need a ride, there is always someone willing to give you a "push" into the water).
  • Walkways inside the pool perimeter provide a great walking track, especially for non-swimmers who choose to walk in waist-deep water for increased resistance and strengthening.

The adjoining hot tub, which holds about 10 people, has a hydraulic lift that provides for maximum independence entering and leaving the spa. Temperature is maintained at a constant 100 degrees. The hot tub provides a therapeutic environment and a gathering place for socializing before and after classes.

Water Class
Staff at UAMS demonstrate a real spirit of teamwork. Their positive attitudes promote a can-do attitude among participants. They provide a wealth of fitness information and adaptive ideas to inspire confidence in participants trying new activities. They laugh a lot and provide lots of new ideas and information. Conversation among participants is light and fun during workouts. One participant commented that if you feel comfortable in a bathing suit, you probably would not be in this class. At UAMS, fitness is fun!
